Privacy Policy

How this site uses analytics, advertising, and cookies.

This policy applies to welcometomillfield.com and the Millfield landing pages used to share book excerpts, beta signup forms, and reader feedback forms for L. M. Sterling.

What data this site collects

Where analytics and advertising cookies are in use, this site may collect information about the pages you visit, the links you click, the forms you start or submit, scroll depth, time on page, and campaign parameters such as UTM tags. If you submit a form, the site may also collect the information you enter into that form.

Counting visits without cookies

Separately from the tools described below, this site keeps a simple count of how many people visit and which pages they read. It does this without cookies and without storing anything at all on your device, so it runs no matter what you choose about cookies.

When a page loads, your IP address and your browser’s user agent are combined with a random value that changes every day, and only the resulting one-way hash is recorded. Your IP address and user agent are discarded immediately and are never stored. The daily random value is deleted after two days, which means the entry recorded for you today cannot be connected to the entry recorded for you next week — by anyone, including us.

What this produces is a daily count of visitors, a count of views for each page, and coarse aggregates: country, whether the device is a phone, tablet, or desktop, and the website that linked you here. It cannot follow you between days, build a profile of you, or identify you.

Google Analytics and Google Signals

This site uses Google Analytics 4 to measure traffic, content engagement, signup conversions, and campaign performance. If advertising consent is granted, Google Signals may also be used to support aggregated cross-device reporting, demographics and interests reporting, and audience building for Google advertising products.

Google Analytics may use cookies and similar technologies to recognize returning visitors and understand how readers move through the site. Google Signals uses aggregated data from signed-in Google users who have Ads Personalization enabled with Google.

Meta Pixel

Where advertising cookies are in use, this site loads Meta Pixel to measure page views, signup events, and related ad performance. Meta Pixel helps measure which ad campaigns and landing pages are leading to reader actions such as email signups. If you decline, or turn cookies off, Meta Pixel is not loaded.

How consent works, and where you are

What happens on your first visit depends on where you are, because the rules are not the same everywhere.

In the United Kingdom, the European Union, the EEA, and Switzerland, nothing is switched on until you say so. Analytics and advertising cookies stay off, Google’s consent settings remain denied, and Meta Pixel is not loaded unless you allow them.

Everywhere else, analytics and advertising cookies are used from the start, and you can turn them off whenever you like. Turning them off denies Google’s consent settings and stops Meta Pixel loading.

Either way your choice is remembered, it overrides the regional default, and you can change it at any time with the “Cookie choices” link in the footer. The visit counting described above uses no cookies and is unaffected by any of this.
